Editor’s note: Reposting this for Brian Vegso
On January 14, 2023, 52 players started round 1 of the Sin City Open 2023 in Henderson, NV. We had a cap of 56 player and hit that cap, unfortunately a few people couldn’t make the event. There have already been several posts, so I’ll try not to post too much of what you have already seen. After 6 rounds, Mike Kravitz took home the AleHorn with a perfect 6-0. I will add to the comments all the deck pictures submitted. We had 11 states and a Canadian make the trip into the Las Vegas Valley.
Thanks to all of you for making the trip to our event. We were able to raise $3150 for the Nevada SPCA. The generosity in donations for the raffles was fantastic. We appreciate every donation and every raffle ticket bought. Anson and Brenda ended up winning the art auction for the piece I commissioned for the event. They are awesome and great to work with for any event! Thanks to Joe’s place and their staff for the good food and great service throughout the day!
The Friday night festivities was a 24 player casual event. We played 60 card minimum singleton (anything EC legal) with random vanguard cards passed out. The winner of each best of 1 round had the opportunity to keep their vanguard card or steal their opponents card. The loser could keep their card or throw it back into the pile and get a new random on in return. After round 4, Jared Kohler and David Craig had 4-0 records. They played a 5th round to deternine a “winner” and Jared pulled out the match. It was a little quirky, a little chaos, but most people had fun with it. Thanks to Donald Lewis of darkside games in Las Vegas for hooking us up with a space for the Friday meet up.
Special thanks to Damyan Brunson for all the help running the event and coming up from California even though I know here was tired from his recent vacation. Thanks to Kelly Portello for running the raffle booth and filling out names on the backs of tickets. Thanks to James Port for the support with photoshopping, getting stuff printed, and listening to me bitch about stuff. Last but not least, Brenda Maddocks and Anson Maddocks Art. Appreciate all the generous donations and working with me on getting playmats on time and ready.
I am looking for to an even better Sin CIty Open 2024. Each event I am part of, I learn something new and hope everyone had as much fun being part of it as we did making the event happen. People thank me for the event, but the event is nothing without all of you. Thanks again!
